A heated driveway in Ontario melts snow and ice from underneath, so there is nothing to shovel and no salt to track into the house. For homeowners with long, sloped or multi-car driveways across the GTA, it is one of the few winter upgrades that changes how the property works every single day from December to March. It is also a serious investment, so it helps to understand the options and the real numbers before you decide.

How a heated driveway works

There are two main systems. Both sit beneath the surface and are controlled by a sensor or timer that starts the system when snow or freezing rain begins.

What a heated driveway costs in Ontario

Published Canadian price guides vary widely, and none of them is a quote for your property. For general context only: HomeStars puts electric systems at roughly $10 to $20 per square foot installed and hydronic at $15 to $30. A 2026 Canadian guide from RenoQuotes is higher, at $18 to $28 per square foot for electric and $26 to $55 for hydronic before the boiler.

The same RenoQuotes guide lists retrofitting cables into an existing driveway at $7 to $17 per square foot and removal of the old surface at $2 to $6 per square foot. Those gaps are the point: the final number depends on the surface, the size, the slope, drainage and the electrical work. Treat any per-square-foot figure as a starting range, not a price.

What it costs to run

Operating cost depends on the system, the size of the driveway and how often it runs. As one example, HomeStars estimates a 500 square foot electric driveway at off-peak Ontario rates of about $0.13 per kWh, running 100 hours a month over winter, at around $65 a month. A sensor that only starts the system during snowfall keeps run time down.

What to plan before you book

Is a heated driveway worth it?

It tends to make the most sense where snow removal is a real burden: long driveways, steep grades, several vehicles, or homes where safety on the approach matters year round. It makes less sense if you are not also resurfacing and the driveway is short and flat. The honest answer is a site visit and a written scope.

Part of a bigger plan

Most of our clients treat the driveway as one piece of the property. We are a full design-build firm: one team handles design, 3D visuals, permits, sourcing and installation, with a workmanship warranty on every project. Driveways often sit alongside landscape lighting and the rest of a backyard plan. Full transformations typically range from $75k to $500k+, depending on scope.
